Foundations: What works & What doesn’t
Dec. 6, 2019Leave a comment
It’s time for me to make an update on my face makeup — liquid foundations. I’ve gone through different brands of foundations in the past months, and this is what I think about them.
Here’s a roundup of what I have. They are not in any particular order.
- elf Flawless Finish Foundation
- elf Acne Fighting Foundation
- Milani Conceal + Perfect Foundation
- Sephora Matte Perfection Foundation
- Dr G Perfect Pore Cover BB SPF PA++
- Dr Jart+ Silver Label Rejuvenating BB Cream
1. elf Flawless Finish Foundation
elf Flawless Finish Foundation was the first liquid foundation I chose when I ventured out into ‘liquid foundations’. When I first used it, I liked it. It was light and airy on the skin. It didn’t provide much coverage though. The lasting power was poor. I would have to apply constantly. Since it was the first and only liquid foundation I purchased, I loved it, but I stopping liking it due to the reasons stated above — poor coverage and lasting power. I tried it with a makeup primer and that didn’t help either. It’s an inexpensive liquid foundation. That’s all there is to it. If you have flawless skin, this could work for you. If you have flawless skin, why wear foundation in the first place?

2. elf Acne Fighting Foundation
After elf Flawless Finish Foundation, I tried the elf Acne Fighting Foundation due to its acne fighting ingredients — salicylic acid, witch hazel, camphor, tea tree, and aloe. So what’s great about this foundation? It provides full coverage, controls oil, dries acne spots out without leaving the skin feeling + looking dry, and is inexpensive. The bad? There isn’t too many shades to choose from. I have the lightest shade, and it’s too dark on my skin. For me, that was the only drawback. It makes me look like an oompa loompa. That is why I won’t purchase it again. If you have acne and can find a shade that matches your complexion, go for it!

3. Milani Conceal + Perfect Foundation
Milani Conceal + Perfect Foundation was my HG foundation for a while after moving away from BB Creams. When I started to use it, it was different. I liked it in the beginning. But, I stopped using it on my skin. This is what I think about it.
It’s supposed to be full coverage, but I didn’t think it really was. I had to apply extra layers on my skin to achieve full coverage. I liked the thin-like texture of this foundation though. It makes my skin look natural. It also has tons of shades to choose from. I was lucky enough to find a couple of shades that worked for me — Porcelain and Ivory. Something that bothered me about this foundation was the fragrance. I thought I could get pass it, but it started to creep up on me as the days went by. I’m not sure if I’ll buy it again or not. Meh.

4. Sephora Matte Perfection Foundation
I loved Sephora Matte Perfection Foundation when I used it the first few times. It was perfect. The shade, coverage, how it felt, how it looked on my skin. I fell in love. As I continued to use it, it dried my skin out pretty bad. I started to get breakouts too. I don’t know what happened. It was great. I guess things change, and that’s what it is. I haven’t touched this foundation since. This is coming from someone with oily skin. Since it dried out my skin to the extreme, I avoided using it around my eyes. It accentuated every fine line and wrinkle. This foundation is a no-go for me. I won’t ever purchase it again.

5. Dr G Perfect Pore Cover BB SPF PA++
I bought Dr G Perfect Pore Cover BB Cream because I wanted to venture out to other BB Creams. This was my first choice. I was impressed the first couple of times of using it. It made my skin look and feel silky smooth. It brightened my skin. Sadly, my skin started to get very oily and breakouts occurred. This BB Cream feels silicone-like. It’s just too much for my skin type. It felt like plastic wrap on my face. Also, the shade is too dark on my skin. I wouldn’t buy it again. 6. Dr Jart+ Silver Label Rejuvenating BB Cream
So far, for many years, Dr Jart+ Silver Label Rejuvenating BB Cream is the only BB Cream that works for me. The only deal breaker is that the shade is a tad dark on my skin. This is the only BB Cream that hasn’t caused my skin to break out even when it ends up looking oily (lol). I’m sticking to it from now on. It works for my skin type. I don’t want to deal with random acne and all of that stuff anymore. This BB Cream is definitely a staple when I wear makeup. That’s right! I saved the best for last. 🙂

My Makeup Routine
May. 4, 2019Leave a comment
It’s time! Here’s my makeup routine! 😊
Let me begin by saying that I do not have a daily makeup routine. It’s because I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis anymore. I used to. One day, I decided to let go of makeup. It happened gradually. I’ve only worn makeup about 5 times in the past months. I’ve been makeup-free for most days. It’s not because I’m lazy. It’s because makeup is not good for my skin type. It makes my skin oily and causes random breakouts. If makeup contributes to my acne, I prefer not to wear it. You might say that I’m wearing the wrong type of makeup. No, I am not. Imagine having naturally oily skin that is prone to acne and piling on makeup on top of that — that is pretty disaterous on a day-to-day basis. Makeup once in a while is OK. It’s not something I want to do every day. Makeup, in my honest opinion, is not good for the skin in general. So why wear makeup? I’ll answer that question in another post! Here are the makeup products that I use and have when I wear makeup.
I use Dr Jart Silver Label BB Cream or Skin79 Orange BB Cream. I prefer Dr Jart much more. The texture feels smoother and makes my skin look flawless. But, I’m not a big fan of either of these anymore. They haven’t helped with wrinkles, brightening, anti-aging, and so on. The only thing I liked about these BB Creams was the SPF. It stayed on my skin much longer compared to an SPF lotion that goes on clear. As of right now, I use it because I have it. I will be on the look out for a new BB Cream that is vegan and cruelty-free. OR, I’ll go back to using the good ‘ol basics: Powder Foundation & Concealer — I’m breaking the liquid foundation first rule, haha. Oh well! 😜
Speaking of powder foundations, I use Milani Even Touch Powder Foundation. I have one in my skin color and one that’s much darker as a bronzer. These work quite well for the price. From what I remember, they are under 10 bucks! You shouldn’t have to pay $20+ for foundation. This is just my opinion. At the moment, I use my BB Creams more often than my Milani powder foundations. As I said above, I’m thinking about switching it around, since powder foundations are 10x more lightweight on the skin. I prefer the natural look over the made-up look.
For my eyes, I use Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes. The same ones I introduced years ago. HAHAH! No, seriously. 😅 I haven’t purchased any new eyeshadows for years. My eyeshadow palettes have lasted for many, many years. I always make sure to disinfect my eyeshadows before using them. I don’t feel the need to buy a $50-$100 palette or have a collection of eyeshadows sitting around in the dust, to be honest. It’s a waste of money and space. I’m not the type of person to buy makeup palettes to stare at either. It’s not my thing.
Eyeliner & Mascara:
Other eye makeup products I use are mascara and eyeliner. For eyeliner, Milani. For mascara, I’m currently using NYX Worth the Hype Volumizing & Lengthening Mascara.
I do use blush. I use Milani blushes. I don’t think they’re the best, but I’m not going to drop $$$ just because I want new blushes. These work for the time being, and I still have them.
Last but not least…
That’s the mascra I was talking about earlier. The NYX concealer is actually pretty horrible. Since I still have lots of product left, I’m just making the most out of it. Don’t buy it. Once I’m done, I’ll move onto something new.
So that’s what I use. I know it’s not much, but it’s something. I think I prefer to keep my makeup routine low-maintinence and very minimal. How about you? Do you wear makeup every day? Do you not wear makeup? What are your favorite makeup products? Share your thoughts. Let’s talk!
